About The Show

About the show

Welcome from the Show Chairman, David Trippett

The British Homing World Show of the Year is a two-day event held every January at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, attracting around 15,000 visitors. It is the highlight of the year for pigeon fanciers who come from all over the world to show their birds as part of a historic community celebration.

Each year we have over 100 trade stands, charity pigeon auctions, raffles for new lofts and the showing and judging of over 2,000 of the top homing pigeons in the UK.

Last year, due to the coronavirus restrictions, we were forced to cancel the physical Show, although we were able to offer a virtual show, probably the first occasion this has been tried by a major show. In 2022 we return to the Winter Gardens to celebrate our 50th anniversary and envisage this being bigger and better than ever.

Our anniversary coincides with the opening of the brand new state-of-the-art conference facility at the Winter Gardens, which will become the Show’s auction centre, offering several individual auctions of world class pigeons under one roof throughout the weekend.

We also hope to engender a party atmosphere on the Saturday of the Show which will culminate in our Gala Evening at the Viva Rooms, featuring top class entertainment as well as the RPRA awards.

To achieve 50 years and sustain enduring popularity reflects the status the show has achieved internationally, and owes a huge debt of gratitude to the ‘founding fathers’ of the show: Les Henshaw, Roy Ryalls, Tom Martinson, Eric Chapman, John Mitchell, Fred Cook, Major Len Lewis MBE, Ron Trippett and Walter Law, who – despite significant opposition – took the bold move to hold the show for the first year, holding an auction sale in case the venture failed to cover the financial outlay. Major Lewis was the General Manager of the RPRA at that time, and Walter Law the first Committee Chairman.

This success was maintained by successive RPRA General Managers, Major Camilleri, Peter Bryant, Stewart Wardrop and currently Ian Evans and their staff, supported by the committee whose Chairman have been, Walter Law, Ron Trippett, Alan Heath, Brian Mead and currently myself, together with the Chief Stewards, Brian Mead, Alan Heath, Charlie Perry and currently Dora Pounder.

The 50th Show is dedicated to the memory of Charlie Perry who sadly passed away in March 2021. Charlie had attended every show from 1973, firstly as steward, then as Chief Steward and member of the show committee.

We continue to have an extremely loyal and exceptional band of stewards, two of whom – Dora Pounder and Terry Allen – have attended all 50 shows. Many are related to the founding fathers and those who followed as members of the organising committee in the show’s early years.

So, I ask that you celebrate during the Show weekend those who have made the show such a success, by enjoying the weekend and taking advantage of everything that is available, but most of all by having fun!

Yours in the sport
